Dr. Aiste Balciunaitiene

Materials Engineer | Green Nanotechnology & Circular Bioeconomy Expert, Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry

Dr. Aistė Balčiūnaitienė is a materials engineer specializing in sustainable, bio-derived functional materials and green nanotechnologies. She holds a PhD (2019) from Kaunas University of Technology and is a Chief Researcher at the Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry (LAMMC), as well as a member of the Lithuanian Young Academy of Sciences. Her research is strongly oriented toward green chemistry and circular bioeconomy principles, focusing on the valorization of fruit and vegetable processing by-products into advanced hybrid nanostructures. These environmentally friendly materials are designed to exhibit antimicrobial, antibiofilm, antioxidant, and stimuli-responsive properties, contributing to solutions for antimicrobial resistance, sustainable agriculture, and reduced environmental impact.

She leads interdisciplinary R&D initiatives that integrate materials science, biotechnology, and environmental sustainability, aiming to develop scalable, low-energy, and non-toxic technologies. Her work emphasizes the replacement of conventional synthetic materials with biodegradable, eco-friendly alternatives and the use of green synthesis approaches for nanomaterial development. Dr. Balčiūnaitienė has co-authored scientific publications in high-impact journals and contributed to patented innovations. She is actively involved in international innovation ecosystems, including EIT Food, collaborating with academic and industry partners across Europe to advance sustainable and resilient food systems. Her work has been recognized through national and international programs, and she is committed to translating scientific knowledge into practical, environmentally responsible technologies that support a greener and more sustainable future.
